Bonny Gas Transport Limited (BGT), a subsidiary of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), has chartered a newly built vessel, AKTORAS, to diversify its shipping portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint.

BGT, established in 1989, has played a crucial role in solidifying NLNG’s position as a major LNG supplier on the global stage. The newly chartered AKTORAS, owned by Capital Gas Limited, marks a significant addition to BGT’s fleet under a Bareboat Charter arrangement.

Equipped with MEGA propulsion systems for reduced emissions and increased efficiency, AKTORAS is a 174,000 m3 capacity class LNG carrier with a length of 299.6 meters, breadth of 46.40 meters, and deadweight of 81,194 tons.

At a recent ship naming ceremony held at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard in Mokpo, South Korea, Mrs. Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the Nigerian President on Energy, christened the vessel as the Sponsor Lady and Godmother, signifying its official launch. The event was attended by dignitaries including Ambassador Ferdinard Nwonye, Dr Philip Mshelbila, Mr Olakunle Osobu, Mr Abdulkadir Ahmed, Mr Andy Odeh, Mr. Ufuoma Otomewo, and Mr Jerry Kalogiratos.

Dr Mshelbila hailed the charter of AKTORAS as a transformative step towards decarbonization and a sustainable future. He emphasized that the new vessel represents a strategic move towards diversifying BGT’s shipping portfolio and enhancing fleet efficiency.

Mrs. Olu Verheijen stressed that AKTORAS will carry the spirit of Nigeria across the world, symbolizing the company’s commitment to adapting and thriving in the evolving global energy landscape. She also highlighted the importance of future-proofing the business to maintain relevance and competitiveness in the dynamic LNG market.

During a pre-vessel naming dinner, Ambassador Ferdinand Nwonye urged Hyundai Heavy Industries to invest in a shipyard in Nigeria, citing the country’s market size, skilled workforce, and strategic location for accessing West and East African markets.

AKTORAS will be managed by NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML).

This event underscores BGT’s and NLNG’s commitment to a sustainable and low-carbon future.
