A comedian and skit maker, Usman Taiye, aka Angel Babaorobo, tells FAITH AJAYI about his journey as a content creator, his size and other issues
What is your educational background?
My journey into the world of content creation has been shaped by different experiences and challenges that have influenced my life.
I managed to finish primary school, which I considered a significant milestone in my early life. However, continuing my education beyond that point was a daunting task, due to the financial constraints my parents faced. The lack of resources meant that I could not further my education beyond that point; and, that actually defined much of my life.
When did you become active on social media?
In 2016, I made my entry into the world of social media. This marked a significant turning point in my life. Social media opened up a world of possibilities and opportunities that I had not previously imagined existed. It became a platform for self-expression, connection, and ultimately, the foundation of my career in content creation.
When did you decide to go into content creation?
My journey as a content creator officially began in 2011. It was not a decision I made overnight. Rather, it was the culmination of various influences and motivations that had been shaping my path for years. It was the people around me and my environment, particularly the challenges and experiences I encountered growing up in a ghetto, that inspired me to start creating content.
The humour, resilience, and unique perspectives of the people in my community formed the bedrock of my creative endeavours.
How would you describe the type of content you make?
The essence of my content is drawn from the rich tapestry of experiences I encounter daily. I find inspiration in the people I interact with on social media, each with their unique stories and voices. I also observe the world around me, drawing from the observations and experiences that make up my everyday life. My content is a reflection of the diversity and vibrancy of the world as I see it.
What are the challenges you face as a content creator?
My career as a content creator has not been without its share of challenges. One of the most significant hurdles has been location issues. The environment where I started creating content often presented logistical challenges I had to overcome. Additionally, financial limitations have been a constant struggle. Funding for creative projects and personal expenses has been a recurring issue.
But, perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of my journey has been the constant mockery and insults I have had to endure as a result of my size. People have not been shy about making fun of my weight, which has been a cause of insecurity and vulnerability throughout my life.
My weight has been a subject of mockery and insults throughout my life. Indeed, it has been a constant source of pain and insecurity for me. I have often considered drastic measures, such as surgery, to lose weight. But, it is a decision that is fraught with complexities and uncertainties.
How have you been able to overcome them?
Despite these challenges, I have been able to persevere and continue my journey as a content creator. The key to my resilience has been the unwavering encouragement and support I receive from the online community. The kindness and motivation of my followers have been instrumental in helping me overcome adversity. That is why I will continue creating content that resonates with my audience.
What opportunities have being a social media skit maker brought your way?
Being a social media creator has opened up a world of opportunities for me. It has been not just a creative outlet, but also a means of sustenance. Financial support from people who appreciate my work has been a lifeline during difficult times. Monetising my social media accounts has also allowed me to generate income. I have been fortunate to attend various events and bring laughter to audiences, and that has been another fulfilling aspect of my career.
What are the most memorable moments you have had in the course of your journey?
In this journey, there have been moments that stood out vividly. One of such memories that I will never forget is when a friend defrauded me of N1m. That unfortunate incident led to my involvement with the police, as the money in question was not rightfully mine. It was a challenging and eye-opening experience that left a lasting impact on me.
Do you think that the way you speak hinders you from having a wider fan base?
That is a recurring question I am asked many times. But, the answer is a resounding ‘no’. My unique voice and style are part of what makes me who I am, and I have found that authenticity resonates with my audience.
Who are some of the people that inspire you to keep on going?
Several individuals and comedians have played a crucial role in inspiring me to keep going. They include Shank Comics, Pankeeroy, Brother Shaggi, and many others, who have served as beacons of creativity and motivation in my journey.
What form of support have you got from loved ones or people in the industry since you started?
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to receive support from various individuals, such as Abu Abel, who generously helped me with a significant amount of money to pay for my rent and get some equipment.
Content creators, such as Maryam Oyakhilome, Shank, Nasboi, and others have also been supportive, and that has been instrumental to my progress.
Where do you see yourself in the near future?
Looking ahead, I have a clear vision of where I see myself in the near future. I aspire to become one of the most prominent comedians in the industry, making a lasting impact, and bringing laughter to audiences on a larger scale.
My journey as a content creator has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. It is a story of resilience and inspiration, driven by the power of the online community. As I move forward, my vision is clear, and my dedication is unwavering, in my pursuit of becoming one of the industry’s leading comedians.
Some people think you are this big because you eat too much. How many times do you eat in a day?
I maintain a specific diet. I eat just twice a day, but during those meals, I consume a substantial amount of food.
In what ways has your weight affected you in terms finding a partner?
I have constantly had to deal with body shaming. Despite being happily married with three children, there have been instances where individuals, whether knowingly or not, made hurtful remarks about me.
I have had to navigate through comments and looks that highlight society’s obsession with physical appearances. However, those encounters have not affected the foundation of my happiness and contentment within my family life.
The love I share with my wife and children is the pillar of my existence, giving me profound fulfillment and purpose. While some people may project their own insecurities or biases onto me, I am secure in the knowledge that my worth is not defined by external perceptions. Despite societal pressures and expectations, I remain steadfast in my commitment to my family, and the values we uphold together.
There might be individuals who express interest in being my girlfriend, or who attempt to undermine my confidence through ridicule, but their actions hold no sway over my self-worth, or the strength of my marital bond. My priorities lie in nurturing the relationships that truly matter to me, and fostering a supportive and loving environment for my family. While the journey may sometimes be challenging, the love and companionship I share with my wife and children far outweigh any superficial judgments or fleeting attention from others.
In essence, while I acknowledge the existence of societal pressures and the prevalence of body shaming, I refuse to let those factors detract from the deep sense of fulfillment and joy that my family brings me. My commitment to my wife and children remains unwavering, and I am grateful for the love and support we share, which serves as a constant source of strength and resilience in the face of external challenges.
Has there ever been a time that you tried working with other skit makers but was turned down or ignored?
No, there has never been a time when I tried working with other skit makers and was turned down or ignored. As a matter of fact, majority of them are eager to collaborate with me, especially now that I’ve gained more popularity.
However, while there has been interest in working together, there have been instances where compensation has been an issue. Despite my stature and increasing popularity, some skit makers have been reluctant to offer fair compensation for my contributions. This discrepancy in value perception can sometimes be disheartening, as I strive to ensure that my time and talents are recognized and compensated appropriately. While there is mutual interest in collaboration, it’s essential for both parties to uphold fair and equitable practices in the creative industry. Nevertheless, I remain open to collaboration opportunities and am grateful for the interest and recognition I’ve received from fellow skit makers. Moving forward, I hope to continue fostering positive and mutually beneficial relationships within the creative community while advocating for fair compensation and recognition of artists’ contributions.
What is your favourite meal?
My favourite meal, without a doubt, is amala and ewedu.
