EFCC arraigns man for alleged N15.5m car proceed theft

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Wednesday, charged a man, Mike Obaze, before the Ikeja Special Offences Court over alleged theft of N15.5m, proceeds from car sales.

Obaze was arraigned on three counts bordering on stealing preferred against him by the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Ahmed Yerima, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence between November and December 8, 2021, in Lagos.

He said the defendant allegedly converted the sum of N7m, proceeds from the sale of a Mercedes Benz GL 12 Model, property of one Mr Anene Nwandukwe.

Yerima also alleged that the defendant converted the sum of N8.5m, proceeds from the purchase of Toyota Corolla 2015 Model and Toyota Camry 2011 Model, to his personal use.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

The prosecutor therefore asked the court for a trial date. But the defence counsel, Ms Nneka Nkana, informed the court of the defendant’s bail application dated February 13, 2024.

Nkana also told the court that the defence would call two witnesses during trial.

Yerima, however, informed the court that he had just been served and that he needed some time to go through the bail application.

He also notified the court that the prosecution would call three witnesses against the defendant.

Consequently, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe remanded the defendant at the correctional centre.

She adjourned the case until February 22 for hearing of the bail application.
