Harmonise tax policies, Abuja chamber tells FG, states

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on Monday, called on the federal and state governments to streamline the various tax policies being implemented in their respective domains.

ACCI’s newly elected President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, made the call in Abuja while extending the chamber’s greetings to Christians in Nigeria on the occasion of the 2023 Christmas celebration.

Although the payment tax is considered a civic duty, its remittance is a significant source of revenue generation that helps the government to meet its statutory obligations.

However, the multiplicity and duplication of taxes by government agencies have turned it into a clog in the wheel of progress for companies, micro, small and medium-scale businesses struggling to survive amid worsening economic conditions and unfriendly operating environment.

Business owners and industries have repeatedly complained about the multiple taxation in many states, as they call on the government to streamline or reduce the taxes imposed on citizens.

Multiple taxation refers to the situation where businesses are subject to various taxes and levies imposed by different levels of government, resulting in a significant burden on their financial resources.

In a statement personally signed by the ACCI president, he appealed “to the government at all levels to prioritise the provision of essential infrastructure, streamline tax policies, and enhance the ease of conducting business.”

Recognising that these measures were indispensable for fostering the development and growth of enterprises, Obegolu emphasized the vital role of government support in propelling economic progress.
