The clamour for power shift to the South on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to gain momentum. Also, the aspiration of former Senate President David Mark for national chairman is gaining ground.

Prominent chieftains and interest groups supporting the call for power shift to the South are increasing.

It was gathered that some key party stakeholders of northern extraction who were hitherto opposed to power rotation have been yielding grounds to the agitation.

They have also stopped their opposition to Mark’s aspiration, which they considered inimical to power rotation in the North.

The PDP governors from the South have been mounting pressure on the former Senate President to run for chairman, following the zoning of the slot to the North by the PDP Zoning Committee.

Sources said the Idoma-born politician has intensified his consultation with stakeholders over what he described as a “call to service”.

The endorsement for Mark has come from some former governors, former ministers, serving and former members of the National Assembly.

Similarly, the six states in the North Central, where Mark hailed from, may have resolved to present him as their sole candidate for chairman ahead of the national convention.

The Zoning Committee, chaired by Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, had last Thursday, announced the zoning of the party chairman to the North.

The announcement had thrown many Northern PDP chieftains eyeing the party’s presidential ticket off balance.

It was reliably gathered that eight of the 13 PDP governors from the South, backed by Governor Samule Ortom of Benue State, had used their numerical strength in the PDP Governors Forum to press for a power shift to the south.

The move was said to have rattled some northern elements with presidential ambition, who are being persuaded to subsume their personal ambitions for the interest of the party and the unity of the country.
